Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was arrested on Thursday after leading a protest against President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas. Reports state that Machado was “violently intercepted” by regime forces as she left the rally, with shots fired at her motorcycle convoy.

This protest was part of a larger opposition effort to contest Maduro’s claim to a third presidential term, amid allegations of election fraud.

Despite widespread opposition and international recognition of Edmundo González as president-elect, Maduro’s government has refused to release detailed election results.

Machado, known as Venezuela’s “iron lady,” had been in hiding for months before reappearing to lead the protest.

Her arrest highlights the ongoing political turmoil and repression in Venezuela, with more than 1,700 political prisoners detained in recent months.
