On Thursday, the Supreme Court of Venezuela ratified President Nicolás Maduro’s controversial victory in the country’s presidential election, stating that the electoral materials reviewed confirmed his win. According to the ruling, the court has “indisputably certified election materials and validates the results of the July 28, 2024 presidential election issued by the National Electoral Council (CNE).”
The court’s ruling has been met with widespread criticism, as the opposition claims that their candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, actually secured a significant majority of the votes. In response to the ruling, González Urrutia emphasized the need for truth and accused the court of usurping popular sovereignty.

“To the court’s judges: no decision will replace the will of the people. The country and the world know about your bias and, as a result, your inability to resolve this conflict,” Gonzalez Urrutia said earlier Thursday in a social media post. “Your ruling will only make the crisis worse.”
Señores del TSJ: Ninguna sentencia sustituirá la soberanía popular.
El país y el mundo conocen su parcialidad y, por ende, su incapacidad de resolver el conflicto; su decisión solo agravará la crisis.

The decision has been condemned by various international observers and human rights advocates, who argue that the court lacks independence and is complicit in electoral fraud. Maduro’s government has taken a hardline stance against dissent, threatening legal action against opposition leaders and citing external interference as a justification for its actions.
Despite the court’s validation, many countries, including the United States, Brazil, and Colombia, refuse to recognize Maduro’s victory.
