The Biden administration has announced new sanctions against Iranian and Russian entities accused of interfering in the 2024 U.S. presidential election through disinformation campaigns.

The sanctions target the Cognitive Design Production Center, a subsidiary of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and the Moscow-based Center for Geopolitical Expertise, along with its director, Valery Mikhaylovich Korovin.

US officials, including Treasury’s Acting Under-Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Bradley Smith, emphasized the countries’ efforts to sow division and undermine confidence in democratic processes.

Reports indicate that generative AI and deepfake technology were utilized to manipulate videos and spread misinformation about candidates.

The US remains vigilant against such threats as it approaches a critical election period.
