Call it the Nixon Détente Part two if President Joe Biden is successful in getting China involved in arms control talks, as the NY Times reports.

It’s certainly a loft goal.

The crux of these arms talks? Artificial intelligence.

The US is aiming to create an accord where nations involved commit to not using AI to make weapons or create violence of any sort.

It comes as Biden aims to no longer create new weapons, but strengthen the US’s current arsenal through technology.

Call it a modern day détente.

A spokesperson for Biden, speaking at the annual meeting of the Arms Control Association Thursday, said that the Pentagon is concerned that China is likely to produce 1,500 nuclear weapons by 2035, increasing their current arsenal by 50%.

But the spokesman said the solution wasn’t the obvious one. “We don’t need to outnumber the combined total of our competitors.”

It presents a stark policy shift and a new era to finally close the Cold War. The US has consistently building up their weapons since the end of the second World War.

But China seems to poo-poo the entire idea. They have refused to even entertain discussions on even limiting their weapon production.

But it might get some traction with the United Nations Security Council. China is a member of the council and the nations united on the issue may pressure China to decrease their weapons production somewhat.

Trump previously abandoned a UN created accord.

He realized much of it was futile without China’s involvement. But still, the USA will try. We’ll see what happens
