The Twin Cities are once again bracing and preparing for an active night as the ex–police officer charged in the killing of George Floyd has been let out of jail. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been released from a correctional facility after posting his $1 million-dollar bail. The other officers charged as accomplices in Floyd’s death had all previously been released.
In response to the news, Governor Tim Walz announced that he is activating the Minnesota National Guard and mobilizing 100 state troopers and 75 conservation officers to help local law enforcement. “Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of Minnesotans, we have asked the Minnesota National Guard to prepare to assist in keeping the peace,” Walz said in a statement.
Chauvin is being charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. The charges stem from the disturbing Memorial Day video in which the officer pushed his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly eight minutes. Floyd’s death sparked nationwide protests against police brutality and systemic racism. In Minneapolis and a number of other cities around the country, the protests devolved into riots with mass destruction and violence taking center stage.
There is no word on where Chauvin plans to stay following his release. According to property records, the Oakdale Home home he shared with his wife, who has filed for divorce, was sold on August 28th for $279,000. The trial is currently scheduled to get underway on March 8th, 2021.
