Former President Donald Trump has withdrawn from a planned interview with CBS News’ ’60 Minutes’ despite initially agreeing to participate. The program, which will still feature an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris, is a long-standing tradition offering airtime to major presidential candidates.

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung claimed that no formal commitment was made and criticized CBS for requesting live fact-checking and for past reporting issues related to Hunter Biden’s laptop.

“60 Minutes begged for an interview, even after they were caught lying about Hunter Biden’s laptop back in 2020,” he said. “There were initial discussions, but nothing was ever scheduled or locked in. They also insisted on doing live fact checking, which is unprecedented.”

Trump himself said on Tuesday that he is still waiting for an apology from CBS after his contentious 2020 sitdown with host Leslie Stahl, during which she denied that the laptop had any implications about Joe Biden’s conduct.

“Well, right now, they came to me and would like me to do an interview, but first I want to get an apology, because the last time I did an interview with them, if you remember, they challenged me on the computer,” Trump said. “They said the ‘laptop from hell’ was from Russia, and I said it wasn’t from Russia.”

“If you remember Lesley Stahl, we got into a little bit of an argument on the camera, talking about that and other things. And you know, they really owed me an apology,” Trump added.

Critics argue that Trump’s withdrawal, coupled with his refusal to debate Harris, could harm his campaign by appearing evasive.

CBS confirmed that the invitation to Trump remains open and that the scheduled broadcast will proceed with Harris’ interview.
