President Donald Trump revealed on Friday that he has sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressing his desire to negotiate a new nuclear agreement to replace the one he withdrew from in 2018.

In an interview with Fox Business, Trump emphasized that he hopes Iran will engage in talks, asserting that it would be beneficial for the country, while warning of severe consequences if they do not.

“I said ‘I hope you’re going to negotiate, because it’s going to be a lot better for Iran,'” Trump said.“I would rather negotiate a deal. I’m not sure that everybody agrees with me, but we can make a deal that would be just as good as if you won militarily. But the time is happening now. The time is coming up. Something’s going to happen one way or the other.”

“I think they want to get that letter,” he continued. “The other alternative is we have to do something, because you can’t let another nuclear weapon.”

The move comes amid ongoing tensions, with the U.S. and Israel opposing Iran’s potential acquisition of nuclear weapons.

The White House has commented only that the letter was sent, and there has been no immediate response from Iranian authorities regarding Trump’s communcation.

The initiative reflects an ongoing strategy of ‘maximum pressure’ against Iran, coupled with a willingness to negotiate, as highlighted by National Security Council statements. Additionally, discussions have emerged about potential Russian mediation in future nuclear talks.
