President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering the creation of an ‘AI czar’ position to direct federal policy and the government’s use of artificial intelligence. Although Elon Musk will not assume this role, he is expected to significantly influence AI policy through his involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) alongside Vivek Ramaswamy.

First reported by Axios, the AI czar would coordinate public and private resources to maintain the US’s leadership in AI and address issues like waste and fraud.

“We’re told the role is likely but not certain,” the outlet reported, citing “Trump transition sources.”

This initiative is part of Trump’s broader strategy to emphasize emerging technologies and restructure the White House, similar to his National Energy Council model. As Bloomberg reported last week, the incoming administration is also vetting candidates for the potential appointment of the first-ever White House “crypto czar,” a role that may eventually be merged with the AI czar position.

As with all “czar” positions in a presidential administration, the eventual appointee(s) would serve in an advisory capacity and as such do not require Senate approval.

Despite Musk not taking the role, his ownership of the AI company xAI and his public feuds with other AI leaders suggest he may leverage his position to benefit his enterprises.

The concept has been under consideration for months, with the goal of prioritizing innovation and technological advancement in the US.
