The Jacksonville Jaguars are likely to select Trevor Lawrence, the Clemson Tigers’ star quarterback, with their No. 1 overall draft pick on April 29. And Lawrence has already made a pick of his own.
A story published by Sportico said Lawrence is signing with Adidas, according to multiple people familiar with the plans.
Lawrence was 34-2 as a Clemson starter and – though the Tigers wore Nike – has been an Adidas backer for a long time.
From 2016 via Twitter, Lawrence wrote Adidas, “hands down has the best shoes/gear out right now.” And he’s consistent, having attended the Masters wearing an Adidas shirt.
While Nike had dominated the sports apparel for most of the past 40-50 years or so, Adidas has made tremendous strides over the past 10, and Lawrence will be in good company,
Adidas’ roster of athletes is pretty impressive, and its list of quarterbacks already includes Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers and Kansas City Chiefs standout Patrick Mahomes.
According to the Sportico story, other NFL stars among the Adidas family include the New Orleans Saints’ Alvin Kamara, the Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Juju Smith-Schuster.
Assuming the report comes to fruition, what will Adidas receive in return? The big one, of course, is the shoes, which Lawrence will wear along with the Jaguars uniform.
Additionally, he certainly figures to become a prominent representative across many platforms for Adidas.
The 21-year-old with the trademark long, blond hair is expected to become the most impactful QB coming into the NFL since at least Andrew Luck in 2012, so Adidas is making a sensible investment.
He’s leaving Clemson after having played three years, and the Tigers reached the four-team College Football Playoff in every one, including a victory in the national title game.
