Bloomberg recently issued a list of the top 25 families in the world. In the top 5 on the list, the first three are American families. Those three families are the Waltons, the Mars, and the Koch. If you’ve ever questioned what the American Dream is, these three families are the definition of the phrase.
We’re highlighting how the leaders of these three families could take a vision or dream and create generational wealth.

Let’s start with number one on the list. Sam Walton created what is now the world’s largest retailer, Walmart. The company’s revenue is $573 billion across more than 10,500 stores. The Walton family owns 47% of the retailer. The journey of generational wealth for the Walton family began in 1945 when Sam Walton bout the first Walmart in Rogers, Arkansas. By the year 1990, Walmart was the nation’s number 1 retailer. In 2002, Walmart topped the Fortune 500 list of America’s largest companies for the first time. Today, Walmart offers health care services in-home delivery, and the family’s wealth spreads across three generations.
A fun fact about the family is that Rob and his daughter Carrie and her husband bought the Denver Broncos for $4.65 billion.

Number 2 on the list is the Mars family. They own Mars Inc, which makes candy like Snickers, Mars Bars, Milky Way, Twix, and M&M’s. The family also owns the provider of the world’s biggest pet care products and veterinary services. Frank Mars began to build his family’s $53 billion wealth in 1911 when he started the Mars Candy Factory. Their wealth has now reached 5 generations.
An interesting fact about the inspiration for Mars Inc. Frank’s mother taught him how to hand dip chocolate can when he was a kid to entertain him while dealing with a mild case of polio.

Third is the Koch family. Koch Industries is a conglomerate with an annual revenue of about $125 billion. Koch Industries headquarters is in Wichita, Kansas. Its founder, Fred C. Koch founded the company in 1940. Two out of four brothers now on Koch Industries after a family feud caused two brothers to leave the family business. The family’s wealth spans 3 generations.
