TikTok knew they were legit when YouTube and Instagram had to copy what was working for them.

That’s where YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels came from.  They were created because of the FOMO those companies had that was because of the success  of TikTok.

Here’s another way to measure a social media company’s success; total number of users, and TikTok said they have now officially hit the 1 billion monthly active user mark.

Here’s what COO Vanessa Papps said in a video posted Monday.

“Each month over a billion people from around the world come to TikTok to be entertained, inspired or discover something new, like sports, music, arts and culture, fashion, DIY and more.”

TikTok would prefer that you don’t characterize them as a social media platform.  They see themselves more as an “entertainment app.”  Seriously.  Here’s what their head of North American business marketing, Sofia Hernandez, said at Variety’s Entertainment and Technology Summit.

“TikTok runs on a content graph so we consider us as more of an entertainment platform, What we’re finding is our users are spending a movie’s worth of time consuming content on TikTok on a daily basis. So, while people will go check social platforms they came to watch TikTok.”

Just last year, TikTok’s future was in doubt when Donald Trump said he might ban Chinese-owned apps because of national security concerns.  Joe Biden reversed Trump’s order and the company is still Chinese owned.  The only difference from last summer is now the company is much bigger, and has one billion active users on their platform.
