Do you believe in sports book lootin’ or do you believe in Jake Luton?
In a world where a 9.1% instant investment return is hard to come by these days, one bold gambler thinks he is stealing with a $99,000 bet that the Green Bay Packers will win at home Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. If he is right, the bet on –1100 odds at William Hill sports book in Nevada will net him $9,000, according to ESPN Chalk sports gambling writer David Payne Purdum.
Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are 6-2 and playing at the friendly confines of Lambeau Field, where Jaguars rookie quarterback Jake Luton and his 1-7 team are likely to face cold, rainy, windy conditions.
But Luton grew up in the Northwest and played college football in Corvallis, Oregon, and the stadiums are mostly empty these days. Luton is coming off a loss in which he nearly rallied the Jaguars to overtime against Houston on Sunday. After he made a miraculous run for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, his two-point conversion pass for the tie was incomplete.
“But in America the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness includes the ability to make bad decisions,” Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio wrote about the $99,000 bet. “Come Sunday, we’ll see if this is one of them. Win or lose, it already sort of feels like it is.”
It probably is a safer bet than putting money this week on Bryson DeChambeau, the favorite to win the Masters. At least there are only two possible outcomes in an NFL game. There are 90 other players who could win the Masters, and 26 of them were ahead of DeChambeau after Thursday.
