The day before Taylor Swift tickets are expected to go on sale after the pre-sale traffic crashed, Ticketmaster is announcing it is calling off Friday’s public ticket sales. The company states the cancelation is due to high demand and insufficient remaining ticket inventory.
You can guarantee Swifties are highly upset and took to Twitter to share their frustrations. The frustrations are understandable. That’s because the traffic driven to the site on Tuesday for pre-sale tickets crashed the site. Roughly 3.5 million fans had already signed up for the chance to buy tickets through the company’s verified fans system. According to CNN, the registration was the largest in pop music history. Swift also made history in ticket sales by selling 2 million tickets. Ticketmaster says it was the most tickets ever sold in a single day. There has been no time given as to when the sale will resume.
Swifties called for something to be done, and now it is. Lawmakers have now put the entertainment company on their radar. According to NBC News, In a letter from Sen. Amy Klochubar, a series of questions was asked to the president and CEO of Ticketmaster’s parent company Live Nation. Senator Richard Blumenthal also pointed out in a tweet how the crash was a perfect example of the Live Nation/ Ticketmaster merger creates a near monopoly that harms consumers. Tennessee’s attorney general has also launched an investigation. The attorney general’s office tweeted that their Consumer Protection team was working to ensure no consumer rights were violated.
It’s safe to say upset “Swifties” outrage sparking investigations into the major company is a perfect example of how consumer power can make or break a business.
