American singer and actress Barbra Streisand said that the Supreme Court is “the American Taliban,” this past Friday.
“The court used “religious dogma to overturn the constitutional right to abortion,” said Streisand, following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Streisand, who has starred in many movies including “Meet the Fockers,” and the 1976 version of “A Star is Born,” went on to make the bold statement that “the (Supreme) Court is the American Taliban,” via Twitter.

Her comments were made after several states enacted so-called “trigger laws,” which ban abortion with some exceptions (such as rape, incest, or if an abortion is deemed medically necessary).
The Taliban has banned women from access to secondary and higher education and dictate what women wear. They also segregate workplaces by sex, according to Human Rights Watch. The minimal schooling women receive “focuses more on religious studies” than actual education.
Since taking control of the government, the Taliban has removed both the police force and the Women’s Affairs Ministry, according to a report.
Associate women’s rights director at Human Rights Watch, Heather Barr, said that the Taliban’s policies have turned women into “virtual prisoners in their homes.”
“The crisis for women and girls in Afghanistan is escalating with no end in sight,” says Barr.
“The Taliban’s policies have rapidly turned many women and girls into virtual prisoners in their homes, depriving the country of one of its most precious resources, the skills, and talents of the female half of the population.”
In May, the United Nations Security Council urged leaders within the Taliban to “swiftly reverse” newly implemented policies that take rights away from women and girls.
The council expressed its “deep concern regarding the increasing erosion of respect for the human rights and fundamental freedoms of women and girls in Afghanistan by the Taliban.”
According to the United Nations, the Taliban demands that women “only show their eyes and recommends they wear the head-to-toe burqas.”
The Taliban are also not fond of the LGBTQ community.
Those who do not conform to rigid gender norms in Afghanistan have faced an increasingly desperate situation and grave threats to their safety and lives under the Taliban said the Human Rights Watch and OutRight Action International in a report released today.
“The Taliban have explicitly pledged not to respect LGBT Afghans’ rights,” said Heather Barr,
As a reminder, the overturning of Roe v. Wade is simply giving individual states the power to limit, ban, or allow abortion altogether.
This is the same concept with how all laws are made when it comes down to the state level (such as state income taxes or determining gun-control laws). Americans in those states, in particular, VOTED for specific candidates who resonate with their values.
