The largest global debut in an animated film’s history was scored by Illumination and Universal’s adaptation of the decades-long popular Nintendo video game, but that’s only one of several records it has claimed.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened across North America along with 70 international markets over Easter weekend. In its five-day domestic premiere from April 5 through April 9, the movie surpassed even the most optimistic of expectations, bringing in $204.6 million. $171 million was raked in overseas for a global start of $375.6 million, the most impressive 2023 showing to date.

The adaptation of the monumental Nintendo video game brought to us in 1985 shares a vast camaraderie, appealing to fans of all ages who have played the Super Mario Bros. series and its various spin-offs through the past (almost) 40 years.

“Nintendo and Shigeru Miyamoto’s Mario has been a cultural icon that has captivated generations,” said Jim Orr, Universal Domestic Distribution Chief who managed the movie release with Universal’s President of International Distribution, Veronika Kwan Vandenberg. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought in an incredibly broad and enthusiastic audience to theaters around the world this weekend.”
