Remember the movie Rust? Last fall, it was filming in New Mexico when the Director of Photography Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed by Alec Baldwin.

Since then, a lot has happened, and on Wednesday morning, the most unexpected thing occurred; Baldwin and the entire cast are coming back to complete filming and finish the movie. Wait, there’s more. The widower of Hutchins, her husband Matthew, will be running the show as the new Executive Producer of the project.  And he’s dropped the wrongful death lawsuit that named Baldwin and his fellow film producers.

To recap. The husband of the woman shot and killed on the set of Rust is not seeking damages and is instead partnering with the entire team of people responsible for her death.

Here’s part of a statement from Matthew Hutchins.

“We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed.

“The filming of Rust, which I will now executive produce, will resume with all the original principal players on board in January 2023. I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin). All of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work.”

While this is a massive win for Baldwin and something that could save him millions in a lawsuit and earn him millions from a film that will have many people curious to see what it is about, he’s not out of the woods. There’s a pretty decent chance he will be hit with criminal charges.  The investigation is ongoing, and the Santa Fe County D.A. will be making an announcement soon.
