When you see a picture of China’s President and leader of the Chinese Communist party Xi Jinping, are you immediately drawn to his sense of style and a firm grasp of hit couture?

The New York Times does. They have a story describing how young Chinese people are trying to rock the Commie leader’s look. The article is called “So Square It’s Hip: Gen Z Tries on the Communist Cadre Look,” and it’s an opinion piece about young adults longing for stability in uncertain times.

Wow.

Here’s an excerpt.

“A dull blue jacket, oversize trousers, a Communist Party member pin adding a splash of red on the chest, a small briefcase in hand. Now the cadre look is cool.”

I’m sure Chanel leaders are on the phone trying to land him for their next big reveal.

There’s more from this story that will make lovers of democracy feel a little uncomfortable.

“The emergence of the unabashedly conventional look reflects China’s conservative political turn. Xi’s signature blue jacket has echoes of the Mao suit.”

Can somebody say creepy man crush?

Someone, please send a note to the fact-checkers and editorial staff at the Times that Mao led a brutal regime that killed an estimated 60 million people during his reign. You might not find him that fashion forward knowing that little factoid.

The Daily Wire reported that last month the Times had a story on Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, and referred to him as a “dapper man in well-pressed suits.”
