Those watching the football game between the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants on Sunday could only have wished it was as entertaining as what happened immediately after the final gun. Once the Rams finished beating the Giants 17-9 in a snooze-fest at SoFi Stadium to improve their record to 3-1, Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey and New York wide receiver Golden Tate met at midfield to settle a family feud.
The two went toe-to-toe, throwing punches in a legitimate brawl in a fashion that you hardly ever see in professional sports, which meant this was personal. Luckily, coaches, teammates and staff members were able to break up the battle, and then it was time to find out what it was that triggered the melee.
When asked about the incident after the game, Rams coach Sean McVay said he wasn’t exactly sure what had happened. “I was shaking hands and kind of got in the middle,” McVay said. “Fortunately, got it broken up and nothing occurred from there.”
Ramsey and Tate were not made available to reporters via Zoom following the game, but the two have had a public feud going back over the last year, which centered around a family situation. Ramsey has two young daughters with Tate’s younger sister, Breanna Tate. Rams safety John Johnson III said it was those off-the-field issues that led to the post-game scuffle. “They’ve got some stuff off the field, and unfortunately, it came onto the field, but I just want to go out there and play football,” Johnson told KNBC-TV. “I try to keep Jalen, his head in the game, and can’t be too upset about it, but hopefully they can squash whatever they had and we can move forward from it.”
Following the game, reports surfaced that Ramsey was waiting for Tate outside the Giants postgame locker room to continue the confrontation, but the rematch luckily did not occur, according to a report from ESPN.
