There’s something that is surreal about watching 80-year old Nancy Pelosi at one of her weekly press conferences, waving her arms dramatically at times, safely donning a face-mask so she’s shrouded in mystery, and then throwing out dramatic statements that leave some people scratching their heads.

On Thursday, the topic of security came up regarding House members, and the Speaker of the House said that individual members can pay for additional security with their congressional allowances, but the House would likely need to pass additional funding for member safety because “the enemy is within the House of Representatives,” she said.

“It shouldn’t be that not only is the president of the United States inciting an insurrection, but keeps fanning the flame endangering the security of members of Congress, to the point that they’re even concerned about members in the House of Representatives being a danger to them,” she continued.

When pressed by the media to clarify what she meant by that statement, she followed “It means that we have members of Congress who want to bring guns on the floor and have threatened violence on other members of Congress.”

She may have been referring to Republican representatives Andy Harris of Maryland and Lauren Boebert of Colorado.  They both have talked about the subject of guns on the floor of the House chamber, where they currently are not allowed.

Pelosi set up a system where House members would be fined thousands of dollars to not abide by added security measures she set up, specifically the installation of magnetometers outside the House chamber.

House members are proved “Members’ Representational Allowance,” otherwise known as an MRA, which they use on the operating budge for staff members and office expenses.  Some House members want the ability to use those funds for more personal security. “I do think though that while it’s appropriate that they use their MRA for their security, they should not have to because money is there to meet the needs of constituents,” Pelosi said.
