Alibaba has been in the news lately because CEO and founder Jack Ma, one of the world’s richest people with a net worth of $60 billion, had been missing, and not heard from since October. The Chinese E-commerce giant is in the news again for reasons that could not be more of an extreme; a deliver driver for Alibaba set himself on fire to protest unpaid wages, and he know has third degree burns over 80% of his body.

Images on social media show 45-year old driver Liu Jin, setting himself on fire next to a delivery scooter in the city of Taizhou. Other videos showed people running to his aid, putting the fire out with fire extinguishers. “I want my blood and sweat money back,” Liu said on video, covered in ash.

His daughter has set up a crowdfunding page to help cover the huge medical bills he is faced with.

There are millions of couriers in China who move around the online orders of food and packages. Small local partners that team with Alibaba are known to skirt around the strict Chinese labor laws that are rarely enforced.

That was the situation with Jin, who was involved in a pay dispute with a local partner. He initially set out to resign, but decided on the more radical move of setting himself on fire to protest the treatment of delivery drivers in China.
