An artificial intelligence developer has created GirlfriendGPT, an AI version of his human girlfriend so the chatbot can shower him with romantic selfies and voice messages on demand.
Insider spoke with Enias Cailliau, who designed his real-life girlfriend’s virtual clone after being inspired by the wildly popular wave of personality-influenced AI chatbots. He modeled his project after CarynAI—the Snapchat influencer, Caryn Marjorie’s AI-powered chatbot—but was unimpressed with competitor pricing at $1 per minute.
“I think that is taking it a step too far because the technology is quite simple, it’s approachable, and everybody can do it,” Cailliau said.
That’s why GirlfriendGPT was developed as an open-source project—to allow the masses to manipulated it with their own love interests’ unique traits and personalities.
Cailliau has considered designing other AI dispositions like the “Karen” and “gym bro” but said they were too difficult to evaluate and accurately curate since the personalities are absent from his real life.
Analyzing and creating his live-in partner’s clone was an easier task, having a muse at-hand, which led to the successful conception of GirlfriendGPT.
“The testing set is there,” Cailliau said. “Every day I communicate with real-life Sacha, and then I just communicate with virtual Sacha and see what the difference is.”
Cailliau fashioned the AI version of his girlfriend utilizing a Large Language Model (LLM) framework, per Motherboard’s reporting.
He then used Google’s chatbot Bard to tailor the virtual clone for more precise likeness to his partner. To mimic Sacha’s voice, the developer employed an AI text-to-speech generator; the bot can send voice messages via Telegram. So GirlfriendGPT can also text selfies, Cailliau applied a text-to-image tool.
In the end, the technology may lead to a world where people are in relationships with two different versions of their partners, or ultimately, one single AI ‘partner.’
