Steph Curry has had tons of fun during his electric NBA career, including three championships, but things spiraled over the past year or two so it wasn’t surprising to see Curry on the social media hit list recently.
What surprised a few haters, though, was how Curry reacted in San Francisco on Sunday: He put on a trademark shooting clinic with 62 points in just 36 minutes as his Golden State Warriors ran past Portland 137-122 at Chase Center.
“When you win and you sustain that, you’re always going to have a target on your back and try to poke holes,” Curry said. “That’s part of the business.” Curry had the NBA’s highest-scoring game this season and set his career high.
At 32 years and 295 days old, Curry is the second-oldest in league history to have a 60-point game, behind only Kobe Bryant, who was 37. He wasn’t perfect, missing one of his 19 free-throw attempts to snap a streak of 80 consecutive successful attempts.
Teammate Draymond Green, who knows Curry as well as anyone, saw a “man on a mission” after the Curry criticism intensified before Sunday’s game.
“He said ‘enough,’” Green said. “People are always going to talk. That’s just the nature of the business we’re in. It’s always what have you done for me lately.”
Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard scored 32 points and joined the applause from social media. “You can’t dish it out and not be able to take it (with a shrug emoji). #Respect,” he wrote in a Twitter post accompanying a video of Curry and Lillard hugging postgame.
Indiana Pacers big man Myles Turner echoed other NBA stars with his tweet. “Bro I better not ever see no more Steph slander on my TL … bro stay shutting people up.”
