While the world waits on Apple to unveil its formal plans to build an electric car, another company is going full-speed ahead with their concept.

Sony announced that they would launch an electric car company in 2022, and they gave a sneak peek of their first model, a sports utility vehicle that looks very cool and futuristic.

Sony has already set up a subsidiary they call “Sony Mobility Inc.” They are mulling over the idea of doing a wide release of an electric vehicle.

Sony has a pretty bold ambition for this venture. Here’s what CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said at the CES event in Las Vegas Tuesday.

“With our imaging and sensing, cloud, 5G and entertainment technologies combined with our content mastery, we believe Sony is well-positioned as a creative entertainment company to redefine mobility.”

The name of their concept SUV is Vision-S 02.  IT will use sensors to enable some self-driving functions, and you know this vehicle will be loaded with some cool entertainment accessories.  Don’t rule out the ability to play a little Madden 23 on a PlayStation connection during long commutes to work.

Sony actually had an earlier prototype vehicle they started testing on roads in Europe a year ago.

As for Apple, well, the rumor mill has been swirling for years that they have something up their sleeves, and Tim Cook said last year that autonomous driving would be a key component of any future Apple car.

The race is on between Sony and Apple. The winner will have a significant advantage in capturing some of Tesla’s dominance in EV production.
