The ex-wife of the second-richest person in the world, who left the union with $40 billion and then rushed into a quickie marriage with a former science teacher at the private school her kids went to and bopped around the world, helping her give part of her fortune to unsuspecting charitable groups is now getting divorced again.
MacKenzie Scott, the first wife of Jeff Bezos, filed a divorce petition this week in Seattle. She’s dumping her husband of a year and a half, former school teacher Dan Jewett. Here’s billionaire philanthropists release info on a failed marriage; she deleted Jewett from several online posts that Scott had about her charitable giving. Poor Dan is scrubbed from the Giving Pledge website and on his soon-to-be exes Amazon author bio.
Scott walked away from her marriage with the Amazon founder with a 3% stake in the company.
I think we can safely assume she had a prenup with Jewett, although it would be interesting to see if she considered him worthy of a charitable donation when they split.
Things looked promising a year ago. Here’s what Jewett wrote as he embarked on a journey to help Scott give away half of her fortune before she died.
“I am married to one of the most generous and kind people I know — and joining her in a commitment to pass on an enormous financial wealth to serve others.”
In just the past nine months, Scott has given away almost $44 billion to over 465 charities, foundations, or nonprofits. Overall, she’s handed out a staggering $12 billion with no strings attached. Her most recent donation was a couple of mansions in Beverly Hills worth $55 million. The California Community Foundation was the lucky recipient.
