Jane Fonda built a career on health and fitness videos. Her classic 1982 video called “Jane Fonda’s Workout” was one of the best-selling VHS videos of all time. She might need some of that flexibility and limberness to remove her foot from her mouth after making controversial statements this week. The actress and political activist said she views the current coronavirus pandemic as a “gift from God” for Democrats in their battle against President Donald Trump.

In a video posted on Tuesday, Fonda said, “I just think COVID is God’s gift to the left.” Laughing after she made the remark, she then went on to say, “That’s a terrible thing to say. I think it was a very difficult thing to send down to us. But it has ripped the Band-Aid off who [Trump] is and what he stands for and what is being done to average people and working people in this country.”

She continued, “We can see it now, people who couldn’t see it before, you know, they see it now, and we have a chance to harness that anger and make a difference.” She went on to say that she is “so blessed to be alive right now.” More than 7 million Americans have now tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, which has claimed more than 210,000 lives.

Fonda has been a lightning rod politically most of her life. Many veterans still refer to the 81-year-old as “Hanoi Jane,” in reference to her trip to North Vietnam in 1972 when she was photographed on an anti-aircraft gun used to shoot down American pilots. She has been very vocal in her opposition to President Trump and continues to urge Americans to vote for Joe Biden.
