R. Kelly is a long way from a recording studio, and being in prison makes it hard to go shopping for jewelry and cars, but the singer is selling a lot of albums since he was convicted of sex trafficking in a New York court on September 27.
The jury found him guilty of multiple charges, including bribery, racketeering and sexual exploitation, and he faces a sentence that could keep him locked up for life. He’ll get the official word on May 4 of 2022, when he is set to be sentenced for all the crimes he was convicted of.
If you think his status as a felon would lessen the appeal of his music, you are wrong. Album sales have jumped 517% since he was convicted. Streams of his collection of tunes is also way up.
A Fox Business story alluded to a Rolling report that said “In 2017, Kelly was averaging around 5.4 million on-demand audio streams per week, and this year he’s averaged around 6.4 million.”
Google shuttered two official YouTube accounts that belonged to R. Kelly, but his music can still be streamed by services like Apple Music and Spotify.
Kelly has one high profile, formerly incarcerated creep defending him as he sits in jail. Bill Cosby, who said Kelly “was screwed” during his trial. Here’s what his spokesman said about Cosby publicly backing Kelly.
“No one fought hard for him,” and his attorneys didn’t “humanize him.”
