In a recent development, the U.S. House of Representatives made a significant move on Thursday regarding President Joe Biden’s impeachment process.
Submitted on June 13, H. Res. 503 accuses President Biden of committing “high crimes and misdemeanors.” The resolution, co-sponsored by Representatives Matt Gaetz and Eli Crane, asserts various allegations against Biden and calls for impeachment – as stipulated in the U.S. Constitution.
Now that the House advanced H. Res. 503, the Judiciary and Homeland Security Committees are tasked with examining the evidence presented in the resolution. The committees may also investigate further to gather additional information. After, they will present their findings and recommendations to the House who will determine if the resolution will be adopted, rejected, or if no action will be taken.
If the committees suggest adopting the resolution and the House agrees, Biden will have to face the impeachment process which involves debates and voting on each article of impeachment.
If a majority of the House members vote in favor of one or more articles, Biden will be impeached.
However, it’s important to note that impeachment by the House is merely the initial step in removing a President from office. If the President is impeached, the process proceeds to the Senate – where a trial takes place. To remove the President from office, a two-thirds majority of the Senators present must vote to convict on any of the articles of impeachment.
The resolution contains two Articles of Impeachment, outlining specific alleged misconduct by President Biden:
Article I: Abuse of Power accuses President Biden of misusing the powers of his presidency. The resolution claims that the executive branch, under the President’s supervision, violated federal immigration law by implementing an “aggressive, open-borders agenda.”
- The President knowingly released over 2 million undocumented immigrants into the United States without ensuring their appearance in immigration court.
- Biden allegedly facilitated an “invasion” at the southern border by ending the Migrant Protection Protocols, closing detention facilities, and refusing to cooperate with state and local law enforcement in matters of border security.
- Accuses President Biden of allowing ineligible asylum seekers to enter the U.S.
Article II: Dereliction of Duty accuses Biden of neglecting his constitutional responsibility by failing to enforce immigration laws and secure the southern border.
- It asserts that President Biden oversaw a surge of illegal immigrants and a historic low number of deportation cases.
- The President’s actions have allowed criminal cartels to gain control of the border, posing a threat to the lives of American citizens.
- Accuses the President of neglecting mandatory detention and deportation provisions of immigration laws, resulting in the entry and continued presence of undocumented immigrants.
In its conclusion, the resolution maintains that Biden’s alleged actions warrant impeachment, trial, removal from office, and disqualification from holding any honorable, trusted, or profitable positions within the United States.
