Fewer than one in three American adults trust the United States Secret Service to protect presidential candidates following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump last month, a new poll has found. At the same time, more than 70% of the country believes that the agency, along with widespread political division, is directly responsible for the shooting.

According to the survey conducted by the Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 87% of adults reported being somewhat or very well-informed about the assassination attempt, compared to only 10% who know very little about it and 3% who know absolutely nothing.

Among those who have followed the news surrounding the incident, very few have any degree of confidence in the Secret Service’s capacity to protect candidates or conduct a fair investigation into the shooting.

Roughly 50% of poll takers also say that political division had a “great deal” of responsibility for what happened, combined with 28% who say it had a “moderate amount.” A total of 71% said the same of the Secret Service.
