Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has had his share of lofty ambitions – and success – during his rise to prominence, but the idea of a retro, sock-hop-era drive-in isn’t going to make the cut.

Tesla looks to be abandoning the L.A. plan but the location will maintain a strong company footprint.

How does “one of the biggest Supercharger V3 stations in the world” sound?

In 2018, the billionaire entrepreneur tweeted that he was going to “put an old-school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant at one of the new Tesla Supercharger locations in LA.”

At the time, Musk didn’t provide many details, so peripheral observers were left to wonder whether he had insight leading to the throwback idea … or perhaps he’d recently enjoyed an episode of “Happy Days.”

According to a March 2018 story in USA Today:

“Musk isn’t the only person in his family with an interest in food. His brother Kimbal co-founded the multistate Kitchen Restaurant Group in 2004, and Square Roots, an urban farming incubator based in Brooklyn, N.Y., with plans to open sites in cities across the U.S. Kimbal Musk sits on Tesla’s board of directors.”

Tesla applied for building permits for “a restaurant and Supercharger station” in Santa Monica at the time.

The company has not proceeded with any work, but it’s all about location, right?

So, if not a drive-in, with waiters and waitresses on roller skates – the whole burger-and-shake thing – what are we looking at?

Perhaps something that fits the Tesla business plan: a huge Supercharger station, with plans already having been submitted.

Tesla, according to the USA Today story published Tuesday, plans to have a station with solar canopies and other amenities including a restroom and 62 Supercharger stalls.

You gotta go big.
