Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the cancellation of the province’s nearly $100 million contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink in retaliation for US President Donald Trump’s recently imposed tariffs on Canada. Ford emphasized that Ontario would no longer engage in business with American companies, stating that U.S. firms would lose out on significant revenues due to this decision.

“Starting today and until U.S. tariffs are removed, Ontario is banning American companies from provincial contracts,” Ford said in a statement posted to social media. “Every year, the Ontario government and its agencies spend $30 billion on procurement, alongside our $200 billion plan to build Ontario. U.S.-based businesses will now lose out on tens of billions of dollars in new revenues. They only have President Trump to blame.”

“Ontario won’t do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy,” he continued. “Canada didn’t start this fight with the U.S., but you better believe we’re ready to win it.”

Ford expressed frustration over the economic impact of Trump’s tariffs, which include a 25% levy on Canadian goods, and vowed that Ontario is prepared to fight back.

The Starlink contract was intended to provide high-speed internet services to rural communities in the province.

In addition to Starlink, Ford mentioned plans to remove American liquor brands from government store shelves, highlighting a broader strategy to support Canadian products.

The trade tensions have escalated, with both Canada and Mexico announcing retaliatory tariffs.

Ford’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment in Canada to prioritize local businesses amidst the trade dispute.
