With so much negativity going on around us, let’s all just sit back for a moment, pour a dram of whiskey and toast our health. We should also toast the whiskey for helping keep us healthy.

The debate and research on consumption of alcoholic beverages continues to volley back and forth from positive health benefits to negative health benefits. Wine has often been touted as a healthy choice in moderation, and now studies are showing that moderate amounts whiskey can also be beneficial for our health.

So how exactly is whiskey beneficial? Clearly, diet and exercise play a huge role in your health but enjoying a pour of whiskey can actually aid in weight loss by curbing your appetite. A single serving of whiskey contains less than 100 calories and has no carbs.

Whiskey has also been proven to help control diabetes as it gains ellagic acid from the barrel aging process. Ellagic acid can control how much glucose is being released from the liver, which keeps your blood sugar in check by slowing it down.

How about your heart and cholesterol? Whiskey helps with both. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as the good cholesterol and it actually increases when enjoying whiskey. It also helps keep your bad cholesterol levels in check, which helps lower your risk for heart disease and a heart attack. Whiskey offers an antioxidant boost even more significant than wine, as the phenolic compounds are absorbed into the body easier from a glass of whiskey than vino.

Other reported benefits include reducing stress, combating free radicals, inhibiting cancerous cells from spreading, memory boost and an overall elevation of your immune system.

Clearly, doctors were onto something back in the day when they said take two shots of whiskey and call me in the morning. In case you are wondering, Jack Daniels and Jim Beam were not the names of the scientists attributed to any of this research. Cheers!
