Giannis Antetokounmbo’s Story is Like No Other

Audiences have never seen a story like that of the Antetokounmpos… which is why Disney decided to make a movie showcasing his and his family’s story.

After emigrating from Nigeria to Greece, Charles and Vera Antetokounmpo struggled to survive and provide for their five children, while living under the daily threat of deportation. With their oldest son still in Nigeria with relatives, the couple were desperate to obtain Greek citizenship but found themselves undermined by a system that blocked them at every turn.

When they weren’t selling items to tourists on the streets of Athens with the rest of the family, the brothers– Giannis and Thanasis would play basketball with a local youth team. Latecomers to the sport, they discovered their great abilities on the basketball court and worked hard to become world class athletes, along with brother, Kostas.

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo said it was an emotional experience watching the movie about his family’s life during a press conference on Wednesday.

The movie “Rise” is about not only Giannis, but the entire Antetokounmpo family. It tells the story of Giannis and his brothers growing up in Greece, and the trials and tribulations they endured as they rose to success through basketball.

“We started from nothing together and we ‘Rise’ as a family and we will keep on rising together,” says an emotional Giannis.

“Rise,” comes out on June 24 on Disney +.
