Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, orchestrator of the October 7 attacks on Israel and head of the terrorist group’s operations in Gaza, has been appointed as the new head of Hamas’ political wing following the assassination of former leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iran last week. Sinwar, a secretive figure who has topped the Israeli kill list since the deadly attacks last year, is now expected to merge Hamas governing functions with the militant campaign against Israel.

Sinwar’s ascension will also likely complicate ceasefire negotiations, as his whereabouts are usually unknown. His close ties with Iran will also factor into the situation, with the Islamic Republic threatening retaliation for the believed Israeli bombing that killed Sinwar’s predecessor.
