There are some Democrats left with some sense.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is one of them, as the NY Post reports.
Fatima Mohammed was selected as the City University of New York’s (CUNY) law school commencement speaker.
The graduating student certainly made waves.
“As Israel continues to indiscriminately rain bullets and bombs on worshippers, murdering the old, the young, attacking even funerals and graveyards, as it encourages lynch mobs to target Palestinian homes and businesses. As it imprisons its children, as it continues its project of settler colonialism by expelling Palestinians from their home. Their silence is no longer acceptable. We are the student body and faculty that fought back,” she proudly proclaimed.
Needless to say, pro Jewish advocates spoke out against the speech, including the prestigious Anti Defamation League.
Now the mayor of New York City is joining the chorus.
He actually attended the graduation ceremony, but left before Mohammed came on.
“I will tell you, if I was on that stage, when those comments were made, I would have stood up and denounced them immediately,” he said at a Jewish Heritage event Tuesday.
Adams also took the CUNY Board of Trustees to task. They did issue a statement calling Mohammed’s words “hate speech,” but none could be reached for comment.
“The silence that we are seeing in the midst of the hate we are experiencing, will never be the silence that will be in City Hall as long as I’m the mayor of New York City,” he said.
Adams has a heavy amount of Jewish voters in his city, so it’s a smart move strategy wise. But he’s never been reflexively on the PC bandwagon. Let’s hope it remains that way
