Elon Musk is suggesting his employees do something that is almost as antiquated in the minds of millennials and others who prefer sweats over suits as sending teletype messages instead of emails.

The CEO of Tesla is actually requiring his executives to work from the office. The key word here is “requiring,” not suggesting, begging, pleading, bribing, or asking nicely.

While CEOs of tech companies in Silicon Valley have no problem with their billion-dollar-plus corporate headquarters collecting dust, and others like the CEO of Airbnb telling his employees he never wants to see them at the office again; Musk has a different spin.

An email that was leaked spells out the details.  Musk wrote that executive staff who want to work remotely must first put in 40 hours at the office or “depart Tesla.”

Musk said in the email that if an exec couldn’t do that, he’d review it personally and approve any exceptions. And he also said he doesn’t just want the execs in “an office.” He wants them in a Tesla office, saying it “must be a main Tesla office, not a remote branch office unrelated to the job duties, for example, being responsible for Fremont factory human relations, but having your office in another state.”

A follower of Musk’s on Twitter asked if he had a message for people who think coming into work is an outdated concept.  He responded precisely like you’d expect him to; “They should pretend to work somewhere else.”

Keep in mind that the leaders at Twitter don’t exactly subscribe to Musk’s work ethic. They told employees they could work from home “forever during the pandemic.” Which prompted Musk to suggest they turn the corporate headquarters in San Francisco into a homeless shelter since “no one shows up anyway.”
