Tuesday, Congressional leaders paid tribute to officers with the Capitol Police Department, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police force, and the family of fallen officer Brian Sicknick. The group received the Congressional Gold Medal for protecting the Capitol during the January 6th riots. While honored with the Congressional Gold Medal, representatives of both police forces and the family of Sicknick refused to shake the hands of U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy.

Officer Sicnick’s family spoke about why they would not acknowledge McConnell or McCarthy. Sicknick’s brother says both McConnell and McCarthy put their political party over what is right. He claims Trump has a hold over them, refusing to admit to wrongdoing by the former President. Sicknick’s mother says the political leaders are “two-faced” for proclaiming how great the Capitol is but also visiting Mar-a-Lago and “kissing his ring.” Fallen officer Brian Sicknick died a day after the January 6th riot. According to CNN, he suffered from strokes and died of natural causes.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief and D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Chief also accepted the Congressional Gold Medal award on behalf of their officers. They both also refused to shake hands with the political leaders.
The award ceremony comes ahead of the expected release of the final report of an 18-month investigation of the Capitol riots.

Congresswoman Liz Cheney also spoke about the actions of McConnell and McCarthy. Cheney says how the two responded shows how low they will go for political ambition. She believes the Republican party is in a dangerous place. What are your thoughts on the current state of the Republican party? Comment below.
