It’s going to be an uphill battle. But Florida Governor Ron DeSantis doesn’t seem to be deterred.
The writing on the wall isn’t great for DeSantis. A Florida Atlantic University poll has former President Donald Trump leading with 59% of the vote to DeSantis 31%. Oh, and that poll is just for Florida primary voters only. Not good numbers considering it’s DeSantis’s home state.

Kentucky doesn’t vote until June, far after the Super Tuesday primaries. But if DeSantis has the fantasy of hanging on during the early primary races and staging a comeback in the late ones, he doesn’t have a lot to work with.
An Emerson College poll for the state has Trump at a whopping 70% to DeSantis’s 14%. This represents an eight-point gain for Trump and a nine-point slide for DeSantis from their last poll conducted a month ago. Kentucky may not matter as a primary poll, but these numbers broadcast a consistent, sagging trend for DeSantis.
DeSantis did have a solid swing in Iowa last week, as Trump skipped visiting the state due to “weather” that never materialized. He seemed to finally get a positive reception from the people who heard him speak. Trump had to cancel his scheduled rally, giving DeSantis a rare leg up. He also announced endorsements from 37 state legislatures in Iowa. But Trump hit back with 100 endorsements from various Iowa elected officials.
Campaign sources tell NBC News that they’re opening up their headquarters in Tallahassee on Monday. With that move, more than $5,000 will be spent, which means that he’ll need to file his own campaign papers and be a formal candidate within two weeks.
But once that paperwork comes through, expect an announcement to come the day after. My money is on this Thursday.
