Here’s an interesting story that hasn’t gotten any press coverage, except for here at Valuetainment.

Former GOP Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is a hero of the Anti-Trump right. The successful, conservative governor was seen as a top prospect in the 2024 presidential race. He has made a career out of criticizing Donald Trump. Everyone thought he would jump. Then, all of a sudden, he announced he wouldn’t.

That could be because the scandal involved with his former Chief of Staff, Roy McGrath. McGrath became a fugitive on the run after being charged with over $400,000 in fraud and embezzlement. He got Hogan to sign off on an unauthorized severance payment of over 200k, and used 200k of government funds for himself. Hogan saw a memo confirming the payment, but later found it was falsified. The former governor claimed innocence.

About two weeks ago, law enforcement came to McGrath’s Maryland home to arrest him. He wasn’t there, nor was he at his other possible residence in Florida. McGrath told law enforcement the night before that he was going to fly from Florida to Maryland to comply with the arrest. He was finally found on the run near Knoxville, Tennessee.

The FBI revealed very little details to the press. They simply said McGrath was involved in an “agent-involved shooting” and that he was quickly taken to a nearby hospital. As NPR casually mentions and then moves on, “further details, including how McGrath was wounded and what led up to it, were not immediately released. The shooting was under investigation.”

You think you’d want to chew on that a bit. McGrath’s attorney also noted it wasn’t clear if the fatal shot was self inflicted or from the FBI.

No details on McGrath’s movements. Did he actively try to run? You think that would be in there. Was he armed? If he was, you think that would be reported. One has to be very careful when jumping to potential conspiracy theories, but the details from the FBI bring up far more questions than answers.

It’s possible that Hogan did know the payments were illegal. It’s possible that there were more payments to enrich more people, maybe even the governor himself?

There’s a reason Hogan didn’t run. He said he didn’t want to split the anti-Trump vote. But he would have been the strongest anti-Trump candidate, and with Haley, Pence and DeSantis refusing to directly criticize the former president, he would have had that lane all to himself. Even if he lost, he could have gotten his name out there as the most prominent anti-Trump Republican. But, perhaps with a presidential run comes greater scrutiny. The media, including NPR, has done a great job shrugging this whole thing off. But we won’t stop digging for you.
