Almost 30-years ago, Mariah Carey did something that would get in the head of tens of millions of Americans this time of year.  She recorded the song “All I Want for Christmas is You,” and since then, the cash register rings louder and way more often than Christmas bells.

Each time you hear the song in the next month, remember that Mariah is getting paid. Handsomely.

In November of this year alone, the track was No. 36 worldwide with 11.2 million U.S. streams. It’s on an hourly loop it seems like on radio stations that play holiday music, and in November, it’s received 8.2 million radio airplay audience impressions.

That’s all great, but I bet you’re wondering just how much cash Mariah makes from the holiday hit, right?

According to a Fox Business report, Mariah makes a small fortune on the song each year regardless of whether she’s been naughty or nice. Apple pays an average play rate of $0.01 for artists, and Spotify pays more, so based on her streaming success, she’s pulling down $2 million or so each holiday season from the song.

Oh, and here’s the best thing that the song has accomplished. It thankfully has unseated “The Chipmunk Song” as the only hong song that made it to the top of the Billboard charts.

You’d find a lot of people that would gladly have paid Mariah themselves for knocking those singing rodents down a few notches.
