Nancy Pelosi, and other leaders of the Democratic Party are aligned on one goal in the next 11 days; remove President Trump from office. They have a multitude of plans to fall back on, and it appears they will methodically go through each one, with speed being of the essense.

The first step according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is to seek to introduce a resolution via unanimous consent calling for Vice President Mike Pence and the current cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment. If that were to happen, Democrats in the House would insist that Pence respond to the resolution within 24 hours.

Pelosi laid out option two on Sunday night. “Next, we will proceed with bringing impeachment legislation to the Floor. In protecting our Constitution and our Democracy, we will act with urgency, because this president represents an imminent threat to both,” Pelosi wrote to Democratic Colleagues. “As the days go by, the horror of the ongoing assault on our Democracy perpetrated by this president is intensified and so is the immediate need for action.”

If the House were to quickly impeach Trump, it would be up to the Senate to decide to hear an impeachment trial, and it’s not very likely. The Washington Post reported that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already told Republicans in the Senate that the Senate would have to receive Unanimous Consent. That is very unlikely, especially with Trump’s term set to end on January 20.

Some Republicans in the House are trying to get in front of this action, saying it would further divide an already fractured country.  “This impeachment would undermine your priority of unifying Americans, and would be a further distraction to our nation at a time when millions of our fellow citizens are hurting because of the pandemic and the economic fallout,” is what  Reps. Ken Buck, Tom McClintock, Thomas Massie, Chip Roy, Kelly Armstrong, Nancy Mace and Mike Gallagher wrote in a statement.

Expect another wild, and sadly historic week in Washington.
