Anthony Davis got everything he wanted out of his move to the Los Angeles Lakers – an NBA championship, an All-NBA first-team selection and the shine of Hollywood.

Thank you, may I have some more money now?

Davis declined to exercise the $28.7 million playing option on his Lakers contract for next season, Yahoo! first reported. That makes the 27-year-old superstar an unrestricted free agent because he wants to secure a long-term deal (cha-ching) and be eligible for free agency again in three years when he is a 10-year veteran (cha-ching, cha-ching). Or he could sign a four-year full maximum contract (cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching).

Imagine being so good that turning down a guaranteed $28.7 million salary is not a risk. Davis knows he will get more money for more years. Davis averaged 27.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.4 blocked shots during the Lakers’ championship run.

Seven other Lakers can be free agents in this shortened offseason because of the NBA Finals finishing last month and the next season starting on Dec. 22. LeBron James also could be a free agent in 2021, but Davis apparently is not aligning with that if he passed on the option expiring then.

Free agency begins Friday, two days after the NBA Draft and four days after the transaction moratorium was lifted. Eleven days later, training camp will start, so Davis will have to make short time of deciding between one nine-figure contract offer and another nine-figure contract offer.

Do we really think the Lakers and Davis’ agent, Rich Paul, just started talking four weeks ago? Nah, pen please.
