Apple announced their new iPhone 12 line Tuesday, including the first phones capable of capturing, editing and sharing HDR Dolby Video. Oh, and it’s five time faster than the average phone with the bold bump to 5G capability.
Hollywood is taking note of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max models (starting at $999 and $1,099, respectively).
“The iPhone Pro will allow filmmakers around the world to make films,” said Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubetzki, who featured his phone-produced short film Monday at Apple’s product launch event. “I think the next great filmmaker, or the next great cinematographer, is already making movies with one of these devices.”
The new phone has a bunch of fancy stuff. For one, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) was created by NASA and is used in Teslas. This provides Augmented Reality capabilities for a filmmaker using a phone.
The wider camera view and longer focal length improve lighting and coloring, as well as ProRAW format and video stabilization all contribute to cinema-grade production.
5G is the game-changer, eliminating expensive equipment rentals and extensive wait-time with data transfer on a movie set. Much of this can now be completed from the cinematographer’s hand, and RAW files can be uploaded directly to the cloud.
“The new iPhone with Lidar, HDR, and the other camera improvements is a visual effects artist’s dream,” Academy Award-winning VFX pro and Magnopus CEO Ben Grossmann told the Hollywood Reporter.
Parents should proceed with caution when telling their kids to put away their new phones. They wouldn’t want stifle the next Quentin Tarantino.
