Two weeks ago Tuesday, President Donald Trump and Joe Biden squared off in the first presidential debate. Two weeks later, there are still postscripts to the story. Recently, Trump campaign aide Lara Trump and Fox News host Chris Wallace, who moderated the first debate, squared off in their own verbal tussle as the two sides continue to find uncommon ground in mask wearing.
“Did you think, Lara, that the rules that applied to everybody else in that hall didn’t apply to you?” Wallace asked Lara Trump about the absence of face coverings among the Trump family during the debate.
Trump has her own take on the situation: “We walked in with a mask on. We sat down – all the seats were socially distanced, and … I want to be very clear, never one time did anyone from Cleveland Clinic come up and ask any member of our family to put a mask on. So, that is totally false.” Trump went on to say that someone behind them had asked an audience member to change masks, but no one had ever asked them anything directly. “What I understand afterwards is that Colby Covington, who was sitting behind me, had a MAGA mask on and they didn’t appreciate that, apparently,” she said, referring to the UFC fighter and Trump supporter who attended the debate as the president’s guest. “So, I think they were coming up to offer him maybe a different mask.”
The Trump family and other guests of the president walked into the debate in Cleveland, Ohio, wearing masks, but for the most part they declined to wear them during the debate.
The president and those who helped prep him for the debate have all tested positive for the virus. President Trump announced his positive test on October 2.
Although the second presidential debate has been officially canceled, the next presidential debate is still on track to take place October 22 and will be moderated by NBC News White House correspondent Kristen Welker.
