How long does it take ink to dry? Steve Nash may want to look at the fine print of his contract to see if there’s an exit clause, based on the comments made by one of his star players for the team he just agreed to coach.
On a recent episode of “ETC’s Podcast with Kevin Durant” on Thursday, Brooklyn Nets star point guard Kyrie Irving literally told Durant that he does not look at Nash’s role as being the guy who calls the shots for the players who take the shots. Irving is an eccentric individual, and has implied in the past that the earth is not round, but this comment might rank higher on the bizarro factor. “I don’t really see us having a “head” coach. K.D. could be a head coach, I could be a head coach [some days].”
Durant didn’t exactly disagree with his new teammate regarding his future coach. In fact, he called it a “collaborative effort” between the players and coaching staff. But Durant wasn’t done. He also said even assistant Jacque Vaughn could be a head coach if necessary.
I’m trying to imagine what would have happened if one of Pat Riley’s players had suggested the same hierarchy for the Lakers in the 1980s, or Knicks in the 1990s.
In reviewing Nash’s resume, he is a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and has been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He’s one of the greatest point guards in the history of the NBA. You’d think those credentials would garner a little more respect, but if nothing else, the Nets are going to be fun to watch in 2021.
As for Irving’s flat earth suggestion, it happened on the podcast of his former teammate Richard Jefferson back in 2017 when they were talking about aliens. Irving believes in aliens, just not head coaches.
