While the majority of the country was focused on election results Tuesday night, residents of New Jersey were apparently searching for information on something else entirely. In the hours following polls closing in New Jersey, online searches for “how to roll a joint” increased 2,800%, according to Google’s figures.
No wonder, since two-thirds of New Jersey voters approved an amendment Tuesday legalizing recreational marijuana use.
Another trending search was “when will weed be legal in New Jersey.” Answers on that question proved to be hard to find, as the state legislature still needs to decide how to regulate marijuana use in the state. The state legislature also has to work with the Cannabis Regulatory Commission, which at this point doesn’t even have any appointed members yet.
New Jersey becomes the 12th state to legalize recreational marijuana and the first in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.
Arizona also passed a law to allow adults 21 and older to legally be in possession of 1 ounce of marijuana. People in the Grand Canyon State can also now legally grow up to six plats at their homes. South Dakota and Montana also passed laws allowing recreational marijuana use. New laws in Montana and Arizona now allow people convicted of certain marijuana crimes to seek expungement of their records.
Mississippi passed legislation approving medical marijuana in the state.
The nation’s capital decriminalized magic mushrooms and other psychedelic drugs, re-categorizing them as the “lowest law enforcement priorities.”
Oregon took the legal drug vote a few steps further, legalizing psychedelic mushrooms and decriminalizing small amounts of illegal drugs including cocaine, heroin, oxycodone and methamphetamine.
