Brazil’s federal police have recommended charges against former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others for their alleged involvement in a coup attempt following the 2022 elections, where Bolsonaro lost to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The allegations include the violent abolition of democracy and forming a criminal organization, with police indicating that some conspirators even plotted to assassinate Lula.
“Federal police concluded on Thursday the investigation into the existence of a criminal organization that acted in a coordinated way in 2002 in an attempt to maintain the then-president in power,” the statement said. “The final report has been sent to the Supreme Court with the request that 37 individuals be indicted for the crimes of the violent overthrow of the democratic state, coup d’etat and criminal organization.”

The final police report has been submitted to Brazil’s Supreme Court, which will decide whether to forward the case to the prosecutor general for trial. Bolsonaro, who has denied the charges and claims he acted within constitutional bounds, faces several legal challenges, including previous disqualification from office until 2030 for abuse of power.
This indictment stems from extensive investigations over two years, revealing that the coup attempt failed due to lack of support from military leaders. As the situation develops, Bolsonaro remains under precautionary measures, including a travel ban.
