Movie theatres turned into concert venues over the weekend as Taylor Swift fans boosted the U.S. economy with the singer’s new film setting a box-office record.
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” garnered between $95 million and $97 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales, according to AMC Theatres. This gross blew past Justin Bieber’s 2011 “Never Say Never” film, which grossed $73 million. “The Eras Tour” is now the best-ever performance by a concert film on its opening weekend.

The Grammy-award winning singer has also made a monumental impact on the U.S. economic growth with her live tour. The sold-out concerts have grossed $2.2 billion and generated roughly $4.6 billion worth of consumer spending, according to Business Insider. Some sources project the “Eras” roadshow to exceed that number to $10 billion.
With Swift’s show only halfway through its touring schedule, the singer has also made an economic impact to the NFL after rumors of the popstar’s relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was confirmed, and she was spotted at multiple games.

According to CNN Business, the average price of a pre-sale and first ticket sales was $455.78, with the average attendance per show estimating over 72,000 fans.
However, Swift’s record-breaking box-office debut failed to make a major dent for AMC Entertainment’s share price, resulting in the theater chain sliding over 13 percent on Friday and another .5 percent during Mondays premarket. AMC has now fallen a staggering 74 percent year to date, thanks to the Hollywood writers’ strike as well as a lawsuit opposing AMC’s stock-conversion plan.
Internationally, the film is estimated to bring in a total range between $126 million and $130 million.
