In response to two assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump, the U.S. House of Representatives has unanimously passed a bill to enhance Secret Service protections for major presidential candidates. The bipartisan legislation, which passed 405-0, mandates that the Secret Service use the same security standards for candidates as it does for sitting presidents and vice presidents.

This decision follows a shooting incident at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania and a separate incident where a suspect was arrested near Trump’s golf course. While the bill requires increased protective measures, it does not allocate additional funding for the Secret Service, with lawmakers arguing that the agency’s issues stem from mismanagement rather than budget constraints.
House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the security of presidential candidates is a non-partisan issue. The legislation is now set to be considered by the Senate and requires President Biden’s approval to become law.
