It’s not quite payback in full, but the Democrats’ 2016 presidential candidate is feeling pretty fulfilled following President-elect Joe Biden’s media declared victory in the 2020 election.
Hillary Clinton, defeated by Trump four years ago, shared some feelings via Twitter.
“The voters have spoken, and they have chosen @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris to be our next president and vice president. It’s a history-making ticket, a repudiation of Trump, and a new page for America. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen. Onward, together.”
Biden, who will turn 78 this month, will be the oldest U.S. president ever to be sworn in if he officially is declared the winner. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will become the first woman and person of color to serve in the office.
It’s a big difference from four years ago, when Clinton’s battle with Trump was a very antagonistic campaign involving verbal darts thrown by both sides. During the third 2016 presidential debate, Trump talked about Clinton as a “nasty woman.”
The former secretary of state’s volleys included calling Trump’s supporters a “basket of deplorables.”
Trump’s 2020 campaign has certainly not escaped Clinton’s consciousness. She connected much of the national civil unrest with what she believes to be the president’s combative, divisive nature.
“I think that Trump and his enablers gave a lot of permission to people to say things and act in ways that were deeply racist and misogynistic,” Clinton told Conan O’Brien during one of the comedian’s recent podcasts.
Clinton was the first female presidential candidate nominated by a major party. She lost the Electoral College vote 304-227 but won the popular vote by nearly 3 million.
