As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, lockdowns are once again returning, and President Trump is turning that into a key campaign topic. “A vote for Biden is a vote for lockdowns, layoffs, misery and getting rid of your Second Amendment,” the president said at a campaign rally in Hickory, N.C., on Sunday night.

While in North Carolina, President Trump also called for Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper to open things up. “Tell your governor to open up North Carolina,” Trump remarked. The Tar Heel state is currently in “Phase 3” of its coronavirus reopening steps. Phase 3 of the lockdown was originally supposed to expire on Oct. 23, but the governor extended the path to reopening until the second week of November.

While in North Carolina, President Trump did take some time to talk about things other than COVID. Trump discussed the economy, Biden not being fit for office, and even pointed to his own non-political past as being a reason to vote for him again.

“You have elected a president who is finally putting America first,” Trump said. “If I don’t sound like a typical Washington politician, it’s because, thankfully, I am not a politician. I don’t always play by the rules of Washington and the Washington establishment. It’s because I fight for you and there has never been anyone who has fought harder for you.”

Trump is planning another stop in North Carolina today for a rally in Fayetteville.
